Pottery production in weerangula

Pottery production as a human activity originated during the period of domestication associated with the Neolithic. Developments and refinements in pottery continued along increasing social complexity worldwide. In Sri Lanka too, the production of pottery though subjected to numerous processes of change has endured through the ages mostly as a family oriented, village based rural small industry. The aim of this exhibition is to present some aspects of the craft of pottery production as practised in contemporary Sri Lanka. For this purpose, ethnographic fieldwork was carried out focussing primarily on a family of traditional pottery producers in the village of Wirangula.
