

The village of Wirangula is located near the town of Yakkala in the Gampaha District of the Western Province. This village which was probably settled since at least the medieval period is documented in the Dutch Thombo’s of the Madapattuwa of the Siyane Korale now at the National Archives. Accordingly, in 1760 this village consisted of nine household groups of which a majority were cultivators. One family group in the village were recorded as pottery producers. Today, the village which comes under the purview of the Gampaha Divisional Secretariat is divided into the grama niladari divisions of 310 Wirangula North and 310 A Wirangula South. Of the 236 families that make up 310 – Wirangula --, 80 families were traditional pottery producers. From this group, at present only some women from about 20 families engage in this traditional craft.
